Why Is Calzone All-Time Favorite Dish


The calzone is an Italian dish. It is a folded, oven-baked pizza. It is mainly originated in Naples in the 18th century. A soft dough makes the base of the calzone and baked in the oven. It is presented with stuffed salami, eggs some vegetables and ham, also stuffed with lots of cheese like mozzarella, ricotta, parmesan, and pecorino cheese. We can also add other toppings and can customize our pizza according to our choice and taste. Moreover, the variations of toppings may include tomatoes, jalapeno, olives, onions, capsicums, minced meat, fish, cabbage, etc.


How the Calzone is made?

The same pizza factory also makes the Calzone. A very soft dough is the secret ingredient to make perfect calzone. They knead this dough with water, salt, oil, and the most important ingredient yeast. They then keep it for 2 to 3 hours wrapped in the damp towel until the dough it raises the dough and the yeast did its job. As the dough gets ready to mold it in proper shape, they then roll it into the small, medium- or large-sized CDS. Then, they stuff the topping of your choice and the brilliant combination of mozzarella and ricotta cheeses in the half-sized disc. Lastly, they fold the other half and seal it with egg mixture.

Favorite Dish of Italians

In Italy, we consider calzone as the most efficient type of pizza that can be delivered everywhere. In Italy they bake the sandwich-sized calzones and serve at Italian food counters or street vendors as you can eat it anywhere, standing or walking. It is a special Italian breakfast for the people who go to work early in the morning.

But in restaurants, you can find amazing versions of calzones. Like, in Apulia they deep fry the calzones and stuff them with tomatoes and mozzarella. And, they call them Lanzerotti.

It is the main dish Italian cuisine also presented in the Sicilian version called Cudduruni pizza. They fill it with onions, potatoes, broccoli, cheese, olives, and mortadella.

In Rome, calzones are of various types according to the stuffings and toppings. Therefore, these six toppings are common and favorite:

  • Sausage
  • Spinach
  • Ham
  • Broccoli
  • Pepperoni
  • cheese

A Yummiest Treat

It is also one of the favorite junk food which has different recipes in different countries. It is typically a base of the pizza dough and stuffing is of cheeses, vegetables, and minced chicken or beef.

To make it, all you need to do is to roll the dough in medium-sized disks and fill some ricotta, parmesan, mozzarella, and provolone. A topping of marinara, a mixture of garlic, olive or parsley and traditional sauces are favorites. The CD-sized disks are then folded in half and this half-moon shaped type calzone is then fried, or either baked. Along with its mozzarella sticks and garlic bread are the most popular sidelines.

In many of the countries, people prefer calzone over pizzas. Although its place of origin is Italy, it is getting much popularity around the world including Middle East countries too.
